Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation

The vision of the Institution for Savings is to positively affect the lives of every person, business and organization within the communities it serves. As a mutual savings bank, the Bank has always believed in dedicating part of its assets toward making the greater Newburyport area a better place to live and work. The Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation was established in 1997 by former President Donald Mitchell as a way to guarantee for future generations the charitable giving that has been the bank's hallmark since 1820.

The Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation provides a vehicle to share the Bank's success with the community that is responsible for that success. Through its Grants Committee, the Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation awards funds to organizations in Newburyport, Newbury, Byfield, Amesbury, Salisbury, West Newbury, Groveland, or Merrimac designated as charities under IRS section 501 (c) (3). The Grants Committee meets on the third Monday of March, June, September, and December. Application deadlines are the first Friday in March, June, September, and December.

The Foundation focuses its giving in the following areas:

Economic and Community Empowerment

This includes programs which focus on the promotion and development of access to safe and affordable housing, and environmental programs which support community revitalization efforts.

Youth Development

This includes initiatives that support youth through social, educational, athletic or cultural programs.

Arts & Culture

This includes programs and organizations that provide art and cultural programs that enrich our communities.

Health and Human Services

This includes programs and organizations that strive to enhance the health and well-being of children, families, and senior citizens in our communities.
