Business Spotlight: George's Restaurant & Bar

At the Institution for Savings, we’re proud to support local businesses that bring people together and make our communities special. This month, we’re shining our Business Spotlight on George’s Restaurant & Bar, a beloved Gloucester gathering place serving generations of families, friends and visitors for more than a century.

A Gloucester Tradition for More Than 100 Years

Located at 178 Washington Street, George’s traces its roots to the 1920s when the George family first opened a neighborhood market in the space. Today, that tradition continues under owner Zorba Kinigstein, a longtime Gloucester resident with more than 20 years of restaurant industry experience.

Known for its generous portions, welcoming atmosphere and extensive menu, George’s offers something for everyone, from classic breakfast favorites to burgers, sandwiches and more (including very popular fried dough bites!) - all available throughout the day.

But for Zorba, what makes George’s truly special is its connection to the community.

“We have families who come in, and when they first learn that they’re expecting, they tell us, and we’re all excited,” he shared. “They bring the newborn in, and then we watch the kids grow up. It’s nice to be part of all of that.”

That community connection extends beyond the restaurant, with George’s supporting local youth sports, community fundraisers and appreciation initiatives for Gloucester’s teachers, first responders and municipal employees.

A Partnership Built on Personal Service

When Zorba purchased George’s, one of his first decisions was to open a business account with the Institution for Savings. What began as a convenient choice with the Bank’s Gloucester office nearby quickly grew into a valued relationship.

“I really enjoy being with a local bank because you call and you talk to somebody on the phone, and they know you and your situation,” Zorba explained. “You have that one-on-one person to work with.”

Today, Zorba relies on the Institution for Savings for both business and personal banking needs, including his home mortgage. He appreciates the Bank’s responsive service, personal attention and commitment to its customers.

It’s a philosophy that closely reflects his own approach to running George’s - building lasting relationships, knowing your customers and giving back to the community.

At the Institution for Savings, we’re proud to support Zorba and the team at George’s as they carry on a Gloucester tradition more than 100 years in the making.
